At the UXD Re-Design Conference held April 29-30, 2013 in Silicon Valley, California, Mel Lim challenged the traditional Western innovation paradigm of “Bigger is Better” while representing the beauty and benefits of being a small startup/entrepreneur. Representing the “small guys” amid corporate giants like IDEO, Zappos, and Ebay, Mel shared her thoughts on frugal innovation, entrepreneurship, failures and aspirations, and cultural management and challenged startups to “break the rules” and to embrace the power of “small.”
A catalyst for creative potential, Mel will carry her messages on using UXD principles and methodologies in design management and innovation, and designing life and brands through aspirations to the WebVisions conference on May 22 – 24, 2013, in Portland, Oregon. She and other industry leaders in web strategy and technology innovation will invite attendees to “Explore the Future of the Web” in design, content creation, user experience, and business strategy.
Focused always on MLD’s influence as a change agent in the world community, Mel Lim felt honored to be invited on April 16 to join the World Brand Congress Advisory Council for 2013. This year’s theme focuses on “Sustainable Brands” as the Congress continues to explore the social and environmental responsibilities of businesses. The Conference will be hosted October 21- 23, 2013 at Taj Lands End, Mumbai, India. Mel will network with community professionals as she explores ways in which her small firm can make a big global impact.

Communicating is key to the collaborative sharing of ideas, and it is essential in telling the empowering story of a brand. On April 21, 2013, the Interactive Media Awards, which honors the web’s most professional work, notified Mel Lim that her design studio had been awarded Best In Class with an overall score of 488 out of 500 for its work on the Carolyn Dempsey Design website. Stringent judging guidelines covering design, content, feature functionality, usability, and standards compliance all attested to the lengths MLD goes to ensure each website is strategically designed, written, and executed to drive brand leadership.
But the accolades did not stop there. On May 1, 2013, the International Academy of the Visual Arts, a 600+ member organization of leading professionals from various visual arts disciplines, announced the winners of its 2013 Communicator Awards. Winners of this largest and most competitive awards program honoring communication professionals were chosen from more than 6000 entries submitted worldwide. The MLD-designed Carolyn Dempsey Design website won the 2013 Gold Award of Excellence for the Self Promotion category and Visual Appeal Category.
