Severe Transvaginal Mesh Lawsuit Complications
This case (case no. 2:13-cv-04159) alleges that, in December 2004, the plaintiff had surgery to have Ethicon’s transvaginal tape (TVT) implanted in an effort to relieve her symptoms of pelvic organ prolapse (POP) and her stress urinary incontinence (SUI). Following TVT implantation, however, the plaintiff began experiencing painful complications that were allegedly so bad that they not only impaired her quality of life but also affected her relationship with her husband. The complaint goes on to state that the Ethicon knew or should have known about the risk of severe complications associated with its bladder mesh slings and that the manufacturer was negligent in warning the public about these risks.

FDA Safety Warning Highlights Risks of Vaginal Mesh Complications
In July 2011, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a safety alert to warn the public about the risks of severe transvaginal mesh complications. Specifically, the FDA’s 2011 bladder mesh warning stated that, after reviewing more than 100 studies on mesh slings, the FDA had found that approximately 10 percent women with transvaginal mesh devices have developed or would develop serious complications and that these mesh complications would require revision surgery and possibly vaginal mesh removal within one year of implantation. In some of the worst cases reviewed by the FDA, multiple revision surgeries were necessary to try to treat the severe injuries caused by transvaginal mesh devices.

According to 2011 FDA vaginal mesh safety alert, some of the serious problems associated with Ethicon’s TVT and other transvaginal mesh implants include urinary pain, pain during intercourse, vaginal scaring, mesh erosion through the vaginal lining, an increased risk of infection, puncturing of the blood vessels/bowels/bladder and recurrence of SUI.

Additionally, the 2011 FDA public warning pointed out that vaginal mesh devices had greater risks of complications than traditional surgery for treating POP and SUI and that vaginal mesh may not be effective at relieving the symptoms of prolapse.
