CIEE has received U.S. Department of State approval to launch Camp Exchange USA, a new program that promotes cultural exchange by bringing qualified international participants to the U.S. to work at American summer camps.

By participating in Camp Exchange USA, international participants will gain youth leadership and teaching experience along with a deeper understanding of the American people and culture—an understanding they can take back to their home countries.

CIEE, the world leader in international education and exchange, has launched Camp Exchange USA, a new exchange program that brings international participants to the U.S. to serve as educators, mentors, and leaders to children at American summer camps. The organization, which is the largest J-1 visa sponsor in the U.S., received a U.S. Department of State designation to run this new program beginning in summer 2013.

While on the Camp Exchange USA program, qualified international university students, recent graduates, and youth workers serve as cabin counselors and activity specialists at accredited American summer camps for approximately nine weeks. During this time, they educate campers about social and individual development while experiencing American life through a quintessentially American tradition. This experience offers participants a chance to develop essential leadership skills and independence and establish lifelong friendships with American peers, mentors, and youth. Following the program, participants have 30 days to travel throughout the U.S. visiting landmarks, meeting Americans, and gaining a deeper appreciation for U.S. culture.

CIEE partners with globally minded American summer camps that promote international exchange as a key dynamic of the camp environment. Together, they are committed to fostering global understanding between Americans and international students and professionals through the unique summer camp experience.

CIEE developed the Camp Exchange USA program to expand the number and types of options international students and professionals have to experience American culture firsthand. According to CEO and President James P. Pellow, Ed.D., “Our new Camp Exchange USA program furthers CIEE’s core mission, which is to offer the highest quality educational and cultural programs that increase global understanding and intercultural knowledge. By participating in a unique American tradition such as summer camp, Camp Exchange USA participants will gain youth leadership and teaching experience along with a deeper understanding of the American people and our culture—an understanding they can take back to their home countries.”
