In support of children living in the fallout following the 1986 disaster, Sherrards Solicitors have donated £1,000 to Friends of Chernobyl’s Children (FOCC), a registered charity which devotes its energies to raising funds to bring children from Belarus to the United Kingdom for a month every year for much needed respite care.
Terry Fendt, Head of Property Services at Sherrards, explains why the commercial law firm chose to support FOCC: “We work closely with a national coffee chain, Muffin Break, and their Managing Director, Mike Arbuckle, explained to us that this is a cause which he and Muffin Break really support. We were only too willing to make a contribution, especially as we are doing an increasing amount of work in Russia and the CIS countries, and it is a pleasure to be able to give something back.”
On 26th April 1986, a reactor at the Chernobyl nuclear power station in northern Ukraine exploded and released large quantities of lethal radiation into the surrounding communities.
Of the radiation that was released, over 70% fell onto the population of Belarus resulting in long-term health and economic problems for the country.
FOCC targets children aged between six and thirteen from social situations that make it difficult for them to get the care they require at home. With help from companies such as Sherrards, these children get the relief they need by staying with host families in the UK for one month each year. Chairman of the South Cambs branch of the charity, Richard Bridgwood was delighted by the donation. “This sort of generous corporate donation makes a big difference to our fund raising activities which are otherwise borne entirely by the host families – and as costs go up and incomes fall it has become harder to raise the sums required for this worthwhile and very hands on charity where we see first-hand each year the benefits our efforts bring.”
