On May 15, Spartan Race discusses the accomplishments of Steve Myers as he stays focused on fitness after a car accident that left him with over 26 broken bones.

Spartan Race’s blog tells the story of Steve Myers, who was injured in a car accident while driving his son to a soccer game in May 2010. While his son came out with only minor injuries, Myers suffered over 26 broken bones, a punctured lung, a lacerated spleen, bleeding in the brain, and crushed heels. He was in the trauma unit for three weeks, and then a nursing home for the rest of the summer.

As a runner, Myers worried that he would no longer be able to do what he loved. He says, “They totally reconstructed my heels. I remember the day the surgeon told me what I kind of thought but didn’t want to hear.” According to the surgeon, it seemed that Myers’ chances of being able to compete in a marathon or mud run were slim.

Exercise had always been important to Myers, and the doctors credit part of his survival and recovery to his great physical conditioning. He went from being bedridden, to a wheelchair, to walking with parallel bars, a walker, a cane, and finally on his own. While still not fully recovered, Myers has made immense progress and plans to participate in a Spartan Race with his wife, who ran the race last year. “I run on a not so daily basis but I’m getting better and stronger and fighting through the pain with more ease because I can picture the day when I cross the Spartan Race finish line,” Myers says.

Joe De Sena, founder and CEO of Spartan Race, commends Steve Myers on his determination to recover from his injuries. “Steve has battled through obstacles in his life that would have caused many other people to give up. We will be cheering him on when he crosses the Spartan Race finish line.”
