Palm Beach Gardens will get a taste of what Californians have coveted for decades – a Trader Joe’s grocery store in their own back yard.

The funky and friendly company that sells hard-to-find specialty foods, many of them eponymously, will open in a 12,500-square-foot location on the southwest corner of PGA Boulevard and Prosperity Farms Road. The 12,500-square-foot location is near Harbour Isles and Prosperity Harbor, as well as several other neighborhoods sold by Waterfront Properties and Club Communities’ real-estate agents.

The fact that a lot of adults with homes in Palm Beach Gardens consider themselves “foodies” is one of the reasons Trader Joe’s selected the city, company spokeswoman Alison Mochizuki said.

Sometime in 2014 – Mochizuki does not yet have a firm opening date – shoppers will be able to enter the cedar-plank-lined store to find it full of gregarious employees sporting tropical-print shirts. That – plus their clever food items, beer and wine – have made them the popular boutique chain they are today.

Trader Joe’s originated in the 1950s and is based in Monrovia, Calif. Three of its 390 stores across the country are in Florida: Naples, Sarasota and Gainesville.

Last year, West Palm Beach initiated a drive to draw Trader Joe’s to a downtown location, but the deal never materialized. Other cities that have launched similar drives include Boca Raton and Delray Beach.

Palm Beach Gardens already is home to a Whole Foods Market in Downtown at the Gardens and a GreenWise in Legacy Place. A Trader Joe’s will complement them both and serve as another draw to an area that has seen progressive growth in the last 10 years. The city has an abundance of retail shopping and fashion destinations, award-winning restaurants and an alluring lifestyle that includes the Intracoastal Waterway and beautiful beaches great for boating, fishing, snorkeling and diving.
