Hawk Development announced today initial plans for a proposed sports complex, including a two sheet ice rink, aquatic center, and destination hotel. The proposed development is a privately funded plan for a state-of-the-art indoor and outdoor facility for sports competitions and recreational use for residents in the Metro East and Southern Illinois.

Hawk Development announced today initial plans for a proposed sports complex, including a two sheet ice rink, aquatic center, and destination hotel. The proposed development is a privately funded plan for a state-of-the-art indoor and outdoor facility for sports competitions and recreational use.

Core partners in the development include McKendree University and the Southern Illinois IceHawks. The Mississippi Valley Club Hockey Association and the St. Louis Curling Club also intend to use the proposed complex. In addition to practicing and playing games, teams also intend to host tournaments at the sports complex.

“The Southern Illinois IceHawks, parents, youth players and fans look forward to calling this new rink home,” said Pat McLeod, President of The Southern Illinois IceHawks. “Our youth hockey family is stronger than ever thanks to a tremendous partnership with the St. Louis Blues and Scottrade Center – our temporary home since fall 2012. A brand new rink in our area will continue to strengthen the hockey community. We thank Hawk Development for its partnership commitment to this complex.”

The project plans also include an indoor and outdoor aquatic center, as well as a hotel with conference facilities. The entire complex is expected to serve residents from the metro east area, as well as Southern Illinois.

“McKendree University is excited to be part of this coalition partnering with Hawk Development,” said Dr. James Dennis, President of McKendree University. “A facility of this caliber is an exciting addition to the many amenities our university is able to offer its students. The ice rink, aquatics facility, and conference hotel will be a tremendous addition to our region.”

“We’re excited to partner with all of these organizations and also provide a venue for residents to enjoy recreational skating and swimming year-round,” said Dean Oelze, President of Hawk Development.

The aquatic center is expected to regularly host regional swimming and diving events at the collegiate and club level. The complex will also serve as a year-round facility for competitive swimming programs for all ages.

“McKendree University will be exploring the addition of several new ice sports including women’s hockey, men and women’s curling, and synchronized skating,” said Chuck Brueggemann, Director of Athletics at McKendree University. “On the water side we will research the addition of swimming, diving, water polo, and synchronized swimming.”

Currently Hawk Development is soliciting various architectural groups with a request for proposal (RFP) for architectural services. After the selection of an architect, site selection will begin immediately. It is anticipated that the development will be built along the Illinois I-64 corridor. The proposed development plan for the complex is scheduled to be built in two phases from 2013 through 2015. It will create numerous permanent jobs following each phase of development, as well as hundreds of temporary construction jobs.

“We are anticipating that the sports complex could open in late 2014 to early 2015,” said Oelze. “We are very excited to bring this project from an idea to a reality and we are looking forward to finding the perfect home for a complex that will serve the community at large.”
