Collaborating with FIDM has been a lot of fun. We’re breaking new ground by colliding two worlds together in such a unique way, said Signal’s CEO Dave Lee. We are going from concept to design and onto the runway! A fun project for all involved.

Eleven excited FIDM Graphic Design students were thrilled to have been involved in a special industry collaboration with Huntington Beach, California-based Signal Snowboards, who recently collaborated with the fashion college on a special industry partnership, creating custom boards for the runway. The snowboards were unveiled to 10,000 people over three days at FIDM’s DEBUT Runway Show in Santa Monica, California.
“Collaborating with FIDM has been a lot of fun. We’re breaking new ground by colliding two worlds together in such a unique way,” said Signal’s CEO Dave Lee. “We are going from concept to design and onto the runway! A fun project for all involved.”
FIDM’s annual fashion gala, held at the Barker Hangar, features designs by graduating students in FIDM’s Fashion Design and Theatre Costume Design Advanced Study Programs as well as work from Interior Design and Textile Design students. Models wearing winter action sports attire designed by FIDM Advanced Fashion Design Student Kelly Knagg carried the 11 boards, along with a special concept board, down the runway.
Graphic Design students were able to visit Signal Snowboards’ headquarters to get a first-hand look at how Signal builds their boards from start to finish. Signal is celebrating its 10th year of business and has gained fans via its popular Every Third Thursday online series, which shows off the company’s manufacturing process and transforms unusual materials (xylophone keys and Legos, for example) into one-of-a-kind custom snowboards.
