Arlington, VA (PRWEB) May 15, 2013
Presented by the Alliance for Women in Media Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the Alliance for Women in Media, The Gracie Awards honors programming and individuals in all facets of radio, television, cable and digital media. Established in 1975, The Gracies have awarded shows and stars such as Sex and The City, Jessica Simpson, Katie Couric, Barbara Walters, Suze Orman, Oprah Winfrey, Meryl Streep, Chelsea Handler, and Claire Danes.
The Alliance for Women in Media (AWM) advances the influence and impact of women in all forms of media. Established in 1951, AWM is the longest-established professional association dedicated to advancing women in media and entertainment.
“It’s incredibly important to support the advancement and positive image of women in the media,” says Ariana Ayu, who will be attending this year’s awards gala. “Girls look up to the women they see and hear in the media – if we don’t ensure those images are empowering, young girls will continue to try to force themselves to be what they are not. AWM is making sure our girls have smart, savvy, and most importantly, REAL women to look up to.”
According to the Status of Women in the U.S. Media 2013 report released by the Women’s Media Center, the percentage of women who are television and radio news directors have increased while women are also outnumbering men on social media sites.
Hosted by Lana Parrilla of ABC's Once Upon A Time, The Gracies will be honoring the 2013 award winners Amy Poehler, Anjelica Huston, Julianne Moore, Lena Dunham, and Lucy Hale, among many others. Sponsors such as Dove who are committed to empowering and advocating for women will be present, and Melissa Etheridge will be performing live at this nationally televised event.
