On May 18, Bellucci Premium, an extra virgin olive oil producer, comments on the effort to help verify the authenticity of olive oil.

According to an article featured on the Agricultural Research Center website, the mislabeling of bottles in the olive oil industry is a common problem. U.S. olive oil growers and producers also face a heavily saturated foreign market. “An estimated 98 percent of all olive oil consumed in the United States is imported,” according to the article.

In an effort to push a higher level of quality control over products that are mislabeled or are cut with addition oils, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has developed new laboratory tests. The article details how the USDA works with the Agricultural Research Service to test the DNA in oils to find their composition.

Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) is the process in which olive oil is tested for other oils. The process creates DNA barcodes for individual oils such as sunflower and canola.
This technology is not new but the article supports the growing usage of this technology.

“Any progression towards authenticating olive oil quality will bring further trust with consumers,” says Natalie Sexenian, marketing manager for extra virgin olive oil producer Bellucci Premium. “Unfortunately there are a lot of olive oil brands that claim to be ‘extra virgin,’ but in reality are mixed with other oils. At Bellucci Premium we are trying to set the standard by providing a traceability app that enables customers to see exactly where their extra virgin olive oil was produced and harvested.”
