With the exception of Sprint, none of the Tier 1 carriers in the U.S. offer a comprehensive carrier-centric music solution, ceding the control of mobile music to OTT players such as Pandora and Spotify completely.

Current Analysis, the market leader in continuous, tactical competitive intelligence for the telecommunications and information technology markets, announced today the release of their latest advisory report on carrier strategies in bringing partner music streaming services to market, authored by Emma Mohr-McClune, Service Director, Global Consumer Services, and Deepa Karthikeyan, Senior Analyst, Consumer Services U.S.

A significant number of carriers across Europe and beyond have now launched a music streaming service in partnership with a third-party provider, either white-labeled or co-branded, and with a great deal of variety in service model and strategic purpose.

“Most services target loyalty promotion. Others aim to improve data attach rates, by incentivizing WiFi-reliant smartphone owners to upgrade to a data bundle,” said Peter Jarich, Vice President, Consumer and Infrastructure at Current Analysis. "Other carriers are leveraging opportunities around market footprint expansion, OEM-offset and potentially new reseller revenue as emerging ‘try-before-you-buy’ music streaming service models evolve."

“With the exception of Sprint, none of the Tier 1 carriers in the U.S. offer a comprehensive carrier-centric music solution, ceding the control of mobile music to OTT players such as Pandora and Spotify completely,” added Emma Mohr-McClune. “Carriers are ill advised to ignore the loyalty promotion and acquisition opportunities that mobile music presents today and should follow the lead of their European counterparts by seeking out mutually beneficial partnerships with leading OTT players, OSs and handset manufacturers.”
