More Than 150 Volunteers Expected to Gather for Service Project at Fort Leonard Wood

"The Armed Services YMCA gives so much to our troops and their families," Veteran Amber Stone said. “We’re excited to be able to give something back to the organization."

On Saturday May 18, The Mission Continues and Fox Sports Midwest will bring together veterans, service members, military families and local residents for a day of service at the newly opened Armed Services YMCA in Waynesville, Mo. The event marks the beginning of the third annual Summer Service Slam, a summer-long partnership between The Mission Continues and Fox Sports Midwest, which brings veterans together with their neighbors to have a positive impact on the community.

Saturday’s project will be led by Amber Stone, an Army veteran who last year, completed a six-month fellowship with The Mission Continues, volunteering with the Armed Services YMCA. Stone worked closely with the children of military families during her time at the Armed Services YMCA, providing art classes and writing workshops for the kids. Her work is one example of how The Mission Continues supports post-9/11 veterans in making successful transitions to post-military lives by reconnecting to their communities and their sense of purpose through volunteerism.

“The Armed Services YMCA gives so much to our troops and their families,” Stone said. “We’re excited to be able to give something back to the organization. By helping them prepare their new facility, they can continue making a difference in the lives of our service members.”

More than 150 people are expected to participate in the service project. Along with volunteers from the local area, participants will include service members from Fort Leonard Wood’s various Army Engineer Leadership Courses and Marine Corps Detachment.

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Stone will lead volunteers in rehabilitating the Armed Services YMCA facility located in the Pulaski County Annex Building (former Waynesville Middle School). The group will install new garden beds, remove old playground equipment, and create an outdoor break area by painting picnic tables and benches. Inside they’ll renovate common areas, update the concession stand, and paint the hallways.

“We look forward to the upcoming service project at the Armed Services YMCA and are proud to partner for a third year with The Mission Continues on Summer Service Slam,” David Pokorny, Director of Marketing, Fox Sports Midwest said.
