Portland Aquarium offers free admission to all foster children accompanied by foster parents who present valid state-issued foster care certification as proof of their status. Portland Aquarium features 30 exhibits displaying more than 2,500 species, including sharks, stingrays, and a jellyfish exhibit. In addition to aquatic and marine exhibits, Portland Aquarium also includes a rainforest room with animals such as tree frogs and exotic birds.
According to the Portland Aquarium Wiki Page, Portland Aquarium is a private, for-profit aquarium constructed in a leased former steakhouse in Oak Grove and built with investment group funding. The for-profit model was chosen instead of a non-profit model to allow for faster construction. Initially the aquarium was to be called the Oregon Aquarium.
When asked why foster children are allowed free entry, founder and CEO Vince Covino answered, “The Portland Aquarium owners have fostered 34 children and know the trials and tribulations these children often face. Many have come from stressful environments and numerous studies point out that aquariums have a calming effect.” Vince continued, “Sometimes just having a great family outing, or a relaxing field trip as a reward can help families bond better and break up their daily routines with a positive event that is fun for the entire family.”
Many visitors say the aquarium gives off a sense of calmness and peace, and that they enjoy simply watching the fish swim in the illuminated tanks. Portland Aquarium’s Facebook page has received well over 30,000 “Likes” since its inception, showing that the aquarium is becoming one of Portland’s most popular attractions.
