“I have never been put in such a high-pressure situation like that at Street League. I've never had to challenge myself with such a difficult trick for the last try. It was the most intense skate contest battle ever!” Nyjah Huston.
Barcelona, Spain (PRWEB) May 19, 2013
Monster Energy’s Nyjah Huston has once again claimed the top spot, earning the gold medal in Street League Skateboarding (SLS) at X Games Barcelona 2013. Undoubtedly the top competitor in the world, the win today backs up his gold a month ago at X Games Foz Do Iguaçu 2013.
SLS brings authentic street skating to the X Games thanks to a legit set up, obstacles, and judging format. Today’s final was broken up into three sections to allow riders to be tested on every part of the course. Skaters hit a Flow Section, a Control Section, and an Impact Section, with the top scorers advancing to the next section.
The whole field was skating insane, but Huston took the early lead on the Flow Section with a 7.9 thanks to a fakie frontside flip over the gap. Next, on the Control Section, Huston once again set the bar high with a nollie back 180 nosegrind (8.6), then improved on that score with a kickflip front hurricane (9.1).
With rain threatening and then forcing a short delay, the sun came out just as the last part, the Impact Section, got underway. Heavy tricks from the field, especially Paul Rodriguez, forced Huston to step up big. Even after solid tricks including a kickflip nose, 180 switch crooked grind, a switch back tail, and a 360 flip 5-0, Huston found himself out of the top spot heading into his last try—he needed something huge if he was to take gold. He delivered with a hardflip over the hubba for an 8.5, edging out Rodriguez for the win by just one tenth of a point.
Afterwards Huston said, “I have never been put in such a high-pressure situation like that at Street League. I've never had to challenge myself with such a difficult trick for the last try. It was the most intense skate contest battle ever!”
Huston’s dominance in skateboarding competition, especially over the last year, is undeniable. He’s been the man to beat at nearly every Street League since it began in 2010 and he’s the current 2012 Street League champion. At X Games he’s dominated as well, winning Real Street gold at X Games Los Angeles 2012 and SLS gold just last month at X Games in Brazil. He has also bagged more prize money than any other skateboarder in history.
