Both of these factors have allowed the structural efficiency of LEDs to improve from 50%- 90% in the last decade.

Recently, it was reported in Lighting.co.uk that the LED industry has seen a grant awarded towards developing wireless LED lamps, The article entitled Photonstar Receives DECC Grant, published May 13th looks into pushing the industry forward.. A representative from Simple Lighting shares their thoughts on the subject.

“Even within the past five years, LEDs have doubled in efficiency and we are seeing regular studies into how the quality, efficiency and price can be improved. We’ve taken a look into how this has been made possible and compiled some points.”

  • Enhanced Equipment- Over the past ten years, the equipment used to manufacture LED dies has experienced radical improvement. Manufactures have shifted from class 10,000 clean rooms to 1,000 clean rooms for all production processes. In addition to this, Vapour Phase Epitaxy has also contributed to an advance in performance, through more consistent colour performance and reduced prices. Both of these factors have allowed the structural efficiency of LEDs to improve from 50%- 90% in the last decade.
  • Improved Processes- Several steps have been added to the LED manufacturing process in recent years to achieve the type of visually appealing warm white light that is craved. The dies are now coated with a highly engineered phosphor coating. The change from sapphire to thin film based die production allows them to be controlled at a molecular level, having a significant impact on wavelength uniformity and so of course, visual performance.
  • Superior Materials- whereas ten to fifteen years ago, three or four inch wafers were commonplace, today they are double this figure. This enables as much as 30-50% cost savings.
