Yorkshire entrepreneur, James Waterhouse, who was responsible for the recent acquisition by KeyedIn of Atlantic Global PLC, has launched his next venture – a business advisory company that supports rapid growth based on business development, funding, M&A activity, performance management and business intelligence.
virtualdirection bridges the gap between operational performance and growth strategy by providing virtual Chief Officers (CxOs) with the specific skills sets to help a business get to the next stage of its evolution. virtualdirection will focus on supporting mid-sized businesses, targeting rapid expansion by aligning operational activity and business performance with corporate vision and the demands of the investors.
In launching virtualdirection, James Waterhouse has identified a market niche that connects the worlds of operations and executive level strategy and investment planning. He says, “Companies are successful if their operational, and executive understanding of business performance, align with what’s required by their customers and their investors. So often, we see businesses that have made key management decisions that, a year down the road, hasn’t added value to their clients and doesn’t fit with their chosen investment strategy.”
“In order to grow revenue without proportionately growing the cost base, you may have to look at M&A and investment for the first time to drive economies of scale. That means you need metrics, visibility into your operations and transparency across your costs. You may also need to make much better use of technology to improve your processes, reduce non value added tasks and provide the platform on which to build the new organisation.”
virtualdirection brings together experts in operations and finance across a range of vertical sector markets to create a powerful human resource accessible by mid-sized companies, without compromising existing board structures and equity arrangements.
Initially, the virtualdirection team comprises experts in: Change Management, M&A and Funding, Procurement, Turnaround, Operational Due Diligence, Communication and Employee Engagement, IT and Systems Implementation, and Project and Programme management. The company has made a clear decision not to employ career consultants, working only with people who have had a demonstrably successful career inside real businesses.
Ian Ainsworth, who has managed companies from £5 million to £750 million turnover and has bought and sold more than 40 businesses on behalf of PLCs, is a Managing Partner with virtualdirection. He says: “It’s extremely complex and expensive for a mid-sized business to assemble the team it needs to drive every stage of its development. As a result, they often end up with several different advisors whom they try to mesh together. At virtualdirection we offer a ‘virtual boardroom’, of people with fund raising, M&A and real operational management experience.”
