The Special Olympics Missouri State Summer Games will bring more than 2,500 athletes and coaches from across the state to Columbia. This state-level event takes place May 30-June 2, on the campuses of the University of Missouri and Columbia College, and at Hickman High School and Town & Country Lanes.
The State Summer Games officially kick off at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 30 with the Opening Ceremony. The Opening Ceremony will feature a Go Wild! theme, the Parade of Athletes, the culmination of the statewide Law Enforcement Torch Run, the lighting of the Flame of Hope, the traditional declaration, “Let the games begin!” and a performance by The ZOOperstars. The public is encouraged to attend this free and fun event.
Competition events will take place at four venues: Hickman High School, the MU Student Recreation Complex, Town & Country Lanes and Columbia College’s Southwell Complex. Six summer sports are featured: Track and Field, Aquatics, Basketball, Bowling, Volleyball and Powerlifting. Competition begins at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, May 30 and ends at 3 p.m. Sunday, June 2. Special Olympics is dedicated to improving the overall health and fitness of our athletes, not only through organized sports training and competition but by also providing free health screenings through the Healthy Athletes program. All of these screenings are provided for SOMO athletes at no charge. The Healthy Athlete Park will be from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday, May 31 on the second floor of the MU Student Center and 9-3 p.m. Saturday, June 1 at Hickman High School. On Friday, services will include Healthy Hearing and Special Smiles, and on Saturday, services will include Fit Feet, FUNFitness and Health Promotion.
