No two patients have the same face, which is why no two rhinoplasty procedures are the same. Whenever I perform a rhinoplasty for a patient, I aim to achieve facial balance, which improves symmetry and brings the most natural results possible.

In a recent article published in the Shanghaiist on May 7th, 2013, just a few days ago, the story of a 20-year-old woman who entered what she believed to be a board certified plastic surgeon’s office for a rhinoplasty was profiled. The woman, who wishes to be referred to as Liu, did not receive the ideal nasal goals she set out to achieve, and was instead left with permanent blindness in her left eye. According to world-renowned rhinoplasty surgeon Babak Azizzadeh, MD, FACS, this can be an unfortunate outcome of being tricked into believing a surgeon is actually board certified and experienced.
“It’s extremely sad that this woman had such a poor experience with her rhinoplasty. Unfortunately, the presence of unlicensed individuals claiming to hold medical degrees is becoming increasingly popular as the quest for beauty and facial balance grows,” said expert rhinoplasty surgeon Dr. Azizzadeh.
In Lui’s case, the man who performed her surgery did not have a license to practice medicine, and instead transformed a small apartment in Shanghai into an improvised plastic surgery office. His experience in cosmetic surgery was limited to his previous job working in a beauty salon. According to police who have since arrested the imposter, Lui’s blindness occurred as a result of injections to the nose during the procedure, which caused permanent nerve damage.
“Whenever a person is considering plastic surgery, it’s very important to review your doctor’s reputation. Ask to look at before and after photos, and most importantly, make sure they are board certified and have attended accredited institutions,” said Dr. Azizzadeh.
As Director of the Institute for Rhinoplasty & Nasal Reconstruction in Los Angeles and a board-certified facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon, Dr. Azizzadeh believes that the best way to achieve ideal nasal outcomes for all patients is to perform custom procedures tailored to meet the goals of each individual.
“No two patients have the same face, which is why no two rhinoplasty procedures are the same. Whenever I perform a rhinoplasty for a patient, I aim to achieve facial balance, which improves symmetry and brings the most natural results possible,” said Dr. Azizzadeh, rhinoplasty expert.
