Movement is so important for children with Autism and creating a fun time for them makes Sufer's Healing even better

On May 20, 2013, A My Positive Perspective episode was broadcast to increase public awareness about the existence of an organization called Surfer’s Healing. My Positive Perspective host Jason Deierlein was joined by Nancy Morris of Surfer’s Healing for the episode. Deierlein first asked Morris how the formation of Surfer’s Healing came about, and Morris replied, “Surfer’s Healing was founded by Iggy Paskowitz whose family was basically the first surfing family. They founded the first surf camp in the country. As Paskowitz became an adult he had a child with Autism, and he discovered that when he would take his autistic child out in the water to go surfing his mood and activity level would improve. Surfing was very calming to his child who was having a lot of tantrums.”

My Positive Perspective host Jason Deierlein then asked Nancy Morris how Surfer’s Healing was then brought to the Charleston area. Morris’ responded to this question saying, “Once this was discovered, it was determined that this activity would probably help people all over with Autism.” Morris continued, “I am an occupational therapist and sent a couple people to Virginia Beach to take part in this event, and when they came back, the improvement was so noticeable that we wanted to offer this event to people here in the Charleston area.”

Deierlein concluded the episode saying, “Movement is so important in children with Autism, and making everything fun for the children is a great thing. It is also important to make these activities fun for the children also.”

My Positive Perspective is a media outlet believing that improvement in our community will be best achieved by focusing on the good things happening in our world today. Having survived a near fatal car accident as a youth, a shift of perception forced one to have a mentality of always concentrating on the brighter sides of things. This was true, and in my book, Return From a Comatose Mind, this belief was put to the test. Appreciation for life was the biggest thing one took away from my brush with death, and it is because of that gives me such a huge desire to be helpful to many. My Positive Perspective is a way of overcoming challenges.
