Data standards—in either government or industry—are a foundational building block to letting people and organizations exchange and understand information

Cambridge Semantics was one of just 22 companies invited to present at last week’s “Data Demonstration Day” on Capitol Hill, hosted by The Data Transparency Coalition. Cambridge Semantics joined EMC, Google, Microsoft and others to showcase how innovative data management applications can address the requirements of the proposed Digital Accountability and Transparency Act (DATA Act).

Originally introduced in 2011 by Committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R‐CA) and Sen. Mark Warner (D‐VA ), the DATA Act is designed to provide transparency into U.S. Federal Government spending. Under this legislation the government will be required to adopt standard identifiers and markup languages for its spending data. At the event, Cambridge Semantics demonstrated how the federal government will need to adopt a “Smart Data” approach to enable new, flexible, accessible, and fully interactive views into spending data.

“Data standards—in either government or industry—are a foundational building block to letting people and organizations exchange and understand information. Smart data standards go one step further and help organizations reuse and link together disparate data sets to really see the big picture,” said Cambridge Semantics co-founder and VP of Marketing & Technology, Lee Feigenbaum. “We are honored to have had the opportunity to showcase the power of semantics-based solutions as Congress and the federal government consider how Smart Data initiatives can address potential DATA Act requirements.”

Smart Data solutions are already being used by large pharmaceutical and financial institutions to address a variety of enterprise data management and end user data consumption challenges. From risk analysis to fraud surveillance, financial compliance to competitive intelligence, Cambridge Semantics provides an open platform for building interactive Smart Data solutions based on semantic technology.
