The hottest degree in LA, and all over the state, continues to be Electrical Engineering, with firms looking for Computer Science and Physics degrees as well.

BCG Attorney Search, a legal recruiter based in Pasadena, CA, has found that law firms in California are increasing their lawyer headcount, with the Los Angeles and San Jose/San Francisco markets having the most opportunities.

The recruiting firm is currently in the process of identifying 497 attorneys across various practice areas for its clients in California. Although most of the opportunities are in Los Angeles and Silicon Valley, there are also a good number of openings in San Diego, Orange County, Oakland/East Bay and Sacramento.

Evan Anderson, BCG Attorney Search’s San Francisco-based Managing Director and the firm’s Director of the Diversity Recruiting Practice says that litigation hiring in San Francisco skyrocketed this spring, demonstrating the largest growth in this sector in four years.

According to Anderson, the IP practice area and patent litigation continue to be the hottest sectors in the state’s legal market. Anderson adds, “Patent prosecution hiring in San Francisco picked up considerably in the last half of 2012 and remained strong in the first quarter of 2013.” The demand for IP litigators and patent prosecutors at all levels is very strong in Silicon Valley. There are 178 attorney job openings that BCG Attorney Search is trying to fill in the SF-San Jose market right now.

In southern California, the associate classes in highest demand are the classes from 2007-2011, according to BCG Attorney Search’s LA Managing Director Liz Hudson. IP litigation positions are in huge demand and at the top of the list. Hudson says, “The hottest degree in LA, and all over the state, continues to be Electrical Engineering, with firms looking for Computer Science and Physics degrees as well.”

The practice area with the highest number of job openings is intellectual property with 143 job openings, with another 39 positions in tech transactions and as patent agents. There are also 80 job openings in litigation and 78 corporate positions.
