The Lion King is trending at the top of search traffic for seats, said Felina Martinez at The Broadway production at the Minskoff continues to play to packed houses, while the touring cast wraps in Nashville on June 2, and opens in Tulsa, Oklahoma on June 4, 2013.

The Lion King continues to reign on Broadway and across America’s heartland. Now in Nashville, the play opens in Tulsa, Oklahoma on June 4, 2013.

The Lion King continues to rule, both on Broadway and in America’s heartland. After opening in 1997, it quickly snared six Tonys, including Best Musical. In 2012, it became the highest grossing Broadway show in history.

The play is based on the Academy Award-winning 1994 Walt Disney animated movie, now the highest-grossing hand-drawn film ever. And, the story itself is based on influences from two of civilization’s most iconic literary sources, Shakespeare and the Bible.

The Broadway production, currently at the 1,597-seat Minskoff Theatre, performed to 98.9 percent capacity for the week ending May 19, in data compiled by The touring cast – having recently played in Omaha, Nebraska and Appleton, Wisconsin – is now at the Tennessee Performing Arts Center in Nashville, Tennessee.

The production wraps June 2 and opens at the Tulsa Performing Arts Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma on June 4, 2013.

As far as critical reviews, both the Broadway and traveling cast have earned high praise for their potent mix of theatre traditions from around the world. Broadway critics give the play a 4.7 out of five, one of their highest ratings.

“The Lion King has achieved an almost tradition-like status with audiences, on Broadway and in its traveling productions,” said Felina Martinez at online ticket marketplace “While most performances begin to sell out closer to curtain call, we still have a great inventory of tickets available.”

“In fact, we’re proud to be able to offer theatre-goers the most complete selection of The Lion King tickets, with a worry-free guarantee to protect their purchase,” said Martinez.

Originally released as an animated musical adventure movie by Walt Disney in 1994, The Lion King has earned over $951 million worldwide as of 2011 and is the highest-grossing hand-drawn film in history. The movie won two Academy Awards in music and a Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture, with its songs written by composer Elton John and lyricist Tim Rice and original score by Hans Zimmer.

The current Broadway adaptation opened in October of 1997, and is now the fifth longest-running Broadway show in history. Also, as of April 2012, it became the highest grossing Broadway show of all time, with over $853.8 million in receipts. (Source:

Directed by Julie Taymor, the bright and colorfully resplendent musical paints a dreamscape of jungle characters in animal costumes as well as giant, hollow puppets. Then there’s Elton John and Tim Rice's hit songs including "Circle of Life”, "Hakuna Matata”, “I Just Can't Wait to Be King”, and "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" – combined with Hans Zimmer's Oscar-winning score and Lebo M's outstanding choral arrangements.

Then, of course, there’s the story. Ripe with influences from the biblical tales of Joseph and Moses, and plays Hamlet and Macbeth by William Shakespeare, it tells of the trials of Simba, a young lion who is to take his father Mufasa's place as king. However, after his uncle Scar kills Mufasa, Simba must stop his uncle from conquering the Pride Lands and avenge his father.

One critic wrote, “So simple, and yet with its strange mix of old-time Broadway showmanship and Natural History Museum grandeur, this one-of-a-kind extravaganza manages to stir the dreams of both the father and the five year-old.”
