It’s a novel about love, self-acceptance, creativity and goal formation for young girls of color, says Mathis

Her book, For Brilliant Brown Girls Everywhere, is a story that is extremely important to the author, as it focuses on topics that she, herself, struggled with as a young woman.

“It’s a novel about love, self-acceptance, creativity and goal formation for young girls of color,” says Mathis, who is also a South Florida Real Estate agent with Beachfront Realty of Aventura and the owner of Exquisite Books by Camilla, a publishing and editing service. “I enjoy writing and telling uplifting stories to impart wisdom and cause others to think. The reason why they are written to encourage is because there is so much pain and hurt in this world. I want my readers to feel better for having read these stories. I want them to think and reflect on their own lives, also.”

The rhinestone-studded shirts that the author has handcrafted are part of that message—and it’s one that should sparkle as much as the young girl or woman of color who is wearing it. “I chose this topic because of the negative media images that need to be shattered,” says Mathis. “These images can cause a lot of suffering. I want young girls all over the world to accept themselves and not feel that they have to be perfect. Young girls of color need to be supported. The shirts are just another way to enforce this idea.”

In addition to enforcing the message of her novel, Mathis’ shirts feature other artwork that is important to her. Camilla Mathis is also the president of Helping Hurting Women Heal Inc. which is a Florida nonprofit corporation based in Miami.
