Center for Discovery, a leader in eating disorder treatment for adolescents and adult women, announced today the successful completion of a full-day training event for clinicians with the renowned Dr. Michael Strober, PhD, a clinical psychologist and professor of psychiatry at the UCLA School of Medicine.

Center for Discovery takes pride in providing continuing education opportunities to its staff and clinicians. Center for Discovery stays on top of cutting-edge training and treatment techniques and is dedicated to providing training in these techniques to its clinicians. During the training event, Dr. Strober provided training on techniques for structuring and conducting effective communication with clients so that the underlying reasons for an eating disorder can be identified. Dr. Strober's primary research activities center on the long-term course and outcome, psychopathology, and genetics of eating disorders. He has authored more than 125 scientific papers and has served on numerous national advisory boards. In addition, Strober is the former editor-in-chief of The International Journal of Eating Disorders.

During the training event, several members of the Center for Discovery clinical team received training from Dr. Strober. Emphasis was placed on the vital importance of getting an extremely thorough history while building a meaningful rapport with the client. Dr. Strober also focused on the issues of temperament and sensitivity in clients dealing with eating disorders and the importance of helping them understand how their sensitive nature is intimately connected to the development of the eating disorder treatment.

Dr. Strober challenged the clinicians to question their reliance on traditional one-hour interviews and recommended that clinicians instead be more open-ended in their questioning, spending enough time with each client to conduct a thorough interview. More specifically, Dr. Strober encouraged clinicians to avoid the appearance of being rushed during meetings with clients. He stressed the importance of devoting full attention to the client.

Clinicians were able to observe Dr. Strober working directly with a client. The Center for Discovery team saw Dr. Strober connect with this client both compassionately and humorously, while being challenging in a way that thoroughly engaged the client. Team members left the training with a better understanding of the importance of asking the right questions and spending enough time with their clients. Many members of the Center for Discovery team have remarked that Dr. Strober's training session has already influenced their work with current clients. They have expressed that this meaningful training inspired them to be more creative in their work.
