We are always happy to improve water quality with our lake weed treatments so that people can fully enjoy the water, especially in the summer, and this is no exception.

Lake Restoration, a pond and lake weed control company based in Rogers, MN, announced today that Half Moon Lake in Western Wisconsin, which it treated in 2009 for a significant infestation of Eurasion Watermilfoil, has remained milfoil free four years later.

After successfully eradicating Eurasion Watermilfoil from several lakes in both Minnesota and Wisconsin, Lake Restoration teamed up with the city of Eau Claire, the state Department of Natural Resources and the US Army Corp of Engineers in 2009 in an effort to reclaim Half Moon Lake from the infestation of Eurasion Watermilfoil that had remained a stubborn presence for over a century. A previous attempt to reduce the aquatic weed trouble in 2007, through mechanical weed cutting and other means, had proven inadequate.

Treatment of 70.4 acres of Half Moon Lake for milfoil began in the spring of 2009 with a combination of herbicides used by Lake Restoration, with the intention of another round of treatment to follow the next year. The treatment proved so successful, however, that in 2010 no additional milfoil control was required, as it had all but disappeared. After four years there are still no traces of Eurasion Water Milfoil.

“Milfoil had a negative impact on Half Moon Lake for so long,” says Kevin Kretsch, CEO of Lake Restoration. “We are always happy to improve water quality with our lake weed treatments so that people can fully enjoy the water, especially in the summer, and this is no exception.”

As with any invasive species, there is still a chance that Milfoil can return to Half Moon Lake, especially if it is accidentally introduced by boaters who unknowingly carry it with them from other sources. If you’re a boater, make sure to thoroughly clean, drain, and dry your watercraft before launching. Drain water from bilge, livewell, motor, ballast tanks, and portable bait containers before leaving water accesses or shoreline property.
