Friday, May 31, will be a special night in HEB. Summer will officially begin when people in the Mid-Cities get together to celebrate the grand opening of Ron’s Corner Tavern, located at 1833 N. Airport Freeway on Highway 183 in Bedford, next door to Big Shots Sports Café on the westbound frontage road. Owners Dirk & Mark Kelcher and General Manager Jesse Simpson (who has many years of experience in Seattle’s brew pub industry and also graduated cum laude from Cicerone’s beer certification program) have pulled out all the stops to make Ron’s Corner Tavern the place to be for craft beer aficionados in the Mid-Cities.

What sets Ron’s Corner Tavern apart from the rest is its unique and quirky atmosphere. “Our Uncle Ron had amassed quite a beer can collection over the last fifty or so years,” Mark Kelcher explained. “He donated them to us so that we could create a unique décor.”

Gaze around the inviting space and you’ll see an amazing collection of over 1500 beer cans, bottles and other beer paraphernalia, all reflecting Uncle Ron’s love of brew and commemorating his travels around the globe. The tavern has a British pub camaraderie feel with a Texas twist. Ten of its 31 beers on tap are crafted in the Lone Star State. With its dark wood interior and a large community table that sits 16 and its emphasis on craft beer and top shelf liquors, Ron’s Corner Tavern promises to be the destination of choice for beer and sports fanatics in HEB.

In recent years, the demand for micro-brewed beers has skyrocketed as much as 400 percent, according to Dirk Kelcher. “Until now, there hasn’t been an establishment in the area that catered to customers who love craft beers,” Mark Kelcher elaborated. “So we decided to build a bar wholly dedicated to craft beer, specialty drinks, and over 100 kinds of bourbon, scotch and whiskey.” In addition to the wide choice of brews, Ron’s Corner Tavern will be a nonsmoking establishment and will feature a tempting menu. Just some of the items that will be available are calamari, cheese board, mussels, and chicken alfredo pizza, all reasonably priced. Kelcher is very optimistic about the niche Ron’s Corner Tavern will fill: “Great food, excellent craft beer, top shelf specialty drinks, a friendly atmosphere and flat screen TVs so you can watch the game with your friends - that’s the kind of bar HEB has been waiting for!”
