This is an exciting breakthrough in the look of projects finished in wood veneer

“This is an exciting breakthrough in the look of projects finished in wood veneer,” said Peter Rodgers, CEO. “We are now able to more closely match the color of the natural wood with the color of the paper backer---making it possible for woodworkers to create finished products with a virtually seamless appearance.”

In addition to the traditional tan Oakwood Veneer and other veneer manufacturers have offered in the past, Oakwood now offers both a dark brown and a translucent white paper backer. The brown paper works well with dark wood veneers such as Walnut, Cocobolo, Ebony, Ipe, Ironwood, East Indian Rosewood, Wenge, and many other naturally dark wood veneer species.

The white paper backer is translucent, making lighter toned veneers virtually see-through. You can see the grain of the wood on applications such as lampshades and other back-lit projects. This backer is appropriate with light species such as Birch, Maple, White Ash, Chen Chen, Holly, and many more.

In the past, paper-backed veneers appeared to have an edge and sometimes that edge would appear in a finished product. However, the appearance of an edge disappears when the paper backer matches the color of the facing wood. Think about how white or almond plastic laminate (for example, Formica brand) looks with its characteristic black line upon installation. Your eyes go right to the line which is, in effect, an unavoidable flaw of the finished project.

However, Oakwood Veneer’s new matching paper backers allow for veneered projects such as furniture, store fixtures, kitchens, cabinets, musical instruments and more---to look like they were crafted of solid wood. Considering the availability of exotic and burl veneers such as Camphorwood Burl and Anigre, these new backer colors allow for the look of solid wood in exotic species at a much reduced cost to the woodworker and end user.

The original tan paper backing, as well as the new dark brown papers, are available both on in-stock items and for special orders in sizes ranging from 4’ x 8’ to 4’ x 12’. The white paper backer is available by special order only with a turnaround of one to two weeks. There is no up-charge for in-stock items and only a nominal extra charge for the white paper backer.

Oakwood Veneer Company carries over 300 species and varieties of wood veneer in stock at their 40,000 square foot manufacturing and warehouse facility in Troy, Michigan. Hours are 8:30 AM through 4:30 PM EST, Monday-Friday. Orders can be made by calling 800-426-6018 or through
