Even in my free time I continually read and write about DUI defense. I want to stay on the leading edge of the field.

David Katz has long been recognized among Florida's leading DUI defense lawyers, and now holds a rare and much sought title for that expertise. Katz has become a Board Certified DUI Defense Specialist, reflecting years of work and hundreds of successful cases.
Katz's focus on DUI law goes back to his time as a prosecutor, when he received training directly from the manufacturer of the Intoxilyzer 8000, Florida's only approved breath testing device. As a defense attorney he speaks widely on DUI defense and trains other attorneys in case strategy and courtroom tactics.
The Florida Bar does not recognize DUI as a specialized area of law and therefore does not award Board Certification in DUI Defense. However, the American Bar Association has accredited the National College for DUI Defense as the only National Organization that can award Board Certification for DUI Defense.
Katz sat for the Board Certification Exam in January 2012 and passed it on his first attempt. Once he completed all other requirements for Board Certification, Katz was officially Board Certified in DUI Defense Law at the National College for DUI Defense’s Summer Session which is annually held at Harvard Law School in July.
Until recently, Katz could not speak of his Board Certification; however a recent change to the Rules Regulating Lawyer Advertising allows Florida attorneys to now be recognized for the Board Certification they have earned, as long as the Certification is from an organization accredited by the American Bar Association.
Katz is one of only three lawyers to hold the title for DUI defense in Florida, and the only with offices in Orlando, Tampa, Gainesville, Tavares, and Longwood.
“I love what I do,” said Katz, a founder of the Katz and Phillips law firm. “Even in my free time I continually read and write about DUI defense. I want to stay on the leading edge of the field.”
Defendants accused of drunk driving often face an unfairly steep battle, according to Katz.
“Obviously it's wrong to drink and drive. But the laws surrounding it are both heavy-handed and complex,” Katz said. “If you're accused it can seem hopeless. But we can help you turn your case around.”
