Today’s pet owners view their pets as family and many would be unable to travel or work long hours with peace of mind without the invaluable services offered by their professional pet sitters.

Pet Sitters International (PSI), the world’s largest educational association for professional pet sitters, invites pet owners, pet-sitting peers and pet-industry professionals to nominate professional pet sitters for the 2013 Pet Sitter of the Year™ award. The nomination period extends through October 31, 2013.

First awarded by PSI in 1995, the Pet Sitter of the Year designation is the pet-sitting industry’s highest honor. This award is presented annually to one pet sitter who embodies the passion and professionalism of the pet-sitting industry.

The 2013 award is sponsored by Business Insurers of the Carolinas.

Pet owners are increasingly relying on the services of professional pet sitters for their in-home pet-care needs when they work or travel. PSI anticipates that this year’s award will bring in the largest number of nominations to date.

“Each year, PSI receives hundreds of nominations for professional pet sitters across the United States and abroad,” noted PSI President Patti Moran. “Today’s pet owners view their pets as family and many would be unable to travel or work long hours with peace of mind without the invaluable services offered by their professional pet sitters.”

PSI’s more than 7,000 member pet-sitting businesses provide pet-sitting services to more than 740,000 households each year. On average, each PSI-member pet sitter performs 2,606 pet-sitting engagements annually.

The American Pet Products Association (APPA) estimates that U.S. pet owners will spend $4.54 billion on pet services, including pet sitting, this year. The APPA also reports that 62 percent of U.S. households own a pet.

PSI’s Pet Sitter of the Year award offers these pet owners an opportunity to recognize and show appreciation for their pet sitters by nominating them for this coveted title.

The recipient of the 2013 Pet Sitter of the Year award will be crowned at PSI’s 2014 convention. In addition, the winner will receive a prize package including: a $500 cash prize, lifetime PSI membership and access to PSI’s Certification Program free-of-charge.

The 2013 Pet Sitter of the Year nomination form can be downloaded from the PSI website. The nomination deadline for this award is October 31, 2013.
