On May 18th, Faceplant Boardriders and WheelRZ with the cooperation of KidsPeace in Orefield, PA put on the first annual ‘Skate for Peace’. The Skate for Peace is a longboarding event that showcases 4 different disciplines of longboard skateboarding. This event allowed riders access the private hills of the KidsPeace Campus. It was a charity event benefiting KidsPeace, which is a treatment facility for kids in crisis.

The first riding discipline was the Downhill. The course had a few sweeping turns and riders would hit speeds in excess of 30 mph. It was a fun event to watch as riders were neck and neck speeding down the course. Results were as follows:
Under 18: 1st-Jared Beers, 2nd-Andrew Collins, 3rd-Anthony Mendez Velazquez
18 & Over: 1st-Dejuane Jones, 2nd-Matthew English, 3rd-Richard Sanchez

The second riding discipline was the slalom. The course is on a mellow, straight slope with cones evenly spaced out in which the riders must weave through to the finish line. There were two racers going at a time and the one who crossed the finish line first advanced. Results were as follows:
1st-Richard Sanchez, 2nd-Jeremiah Weather, 3rd-Byron A. Idrovo

The third event of the day was the Slide Jam. This has become one of the most popular events in longboarding (also known to some as freeriding and freestyle). Sliding is where a rider can be creative and showcase their technical and style skills by laying down different variations of tricks with their longboards. It is one of the most fun events to watch, and there are usually quite a few good spills too. Results were as follows:
1st-Dax Pradarits, 2nd-Kardon Allard, 3rd-Rob Wheeler

The final event of the day was a “Ditch Session”. The KidsPeace Campus has a pretty awesome drainage ditch on a slope with decent pavement which is a skaters dream. Faceplant Boardriders and WheelRZ utilized this rare find and made an event out of it. Riders would pick up speed surfing down the walls and lay down their tricks on the larger wall of the ditch for the judges. Results were as follows:
1st-Byron A. Idrovo, 2nd-Connor Bewighouse, 3rd-Cody Baker

All of the riders left the event stoked. Everyone had an amazing time from the riders to the spectators. There were a lot of volunteers who helped make the event happen. Faceplant Boardriders and WheelRZ Rider Brian Fitch organized the whole event and made it a stellar one. Faceplant Boardriders and WheelRZ Owner Ricky Wheeler also laid down his longboard for the day to help Brian make the event run smoothly. The Skate for Peace raised $1500 to help KidsPeace, and the top three riders from each event took home some cash prizes and other prizes of their choice. You can see the "Skate for Peace" Video at

Faceplant Boardriders and WheelRZ will be hosting two more events this year. One is in September in Ellwood Crossan Park near the DE/PA border and the other is their Second Annual Skate the Cape Shred Festival. Last year’s Skate the Cape was a huge success, and they plan to make the event even bigger this year making it a two day event.
