International Poll Reveals Those Most Familiar with the Technology See a Long Future for Siebel Software

Siebel Observer, the leading independent publication devoted to Oracle Siebel and Oracle Business Analytics technology, and Siebel Essentials, the premier blog covering Oracle Siebel, OBIEE, and Fusion today announced the results of a survey of their readers and the readers of other leading blogs on the future of the Oracle Siebel technology and its implication on the CRM market. The poll included responses from 587 technologists to reveal: the overwhelming majority expects Oracle Siebel technology will continue to be in use for the foreseeable future.

Siebel will celebrate its 20th anniversary this summer, and not surprisingly, some people are questioning its relevance in the era of the cloud. Yet 75 percent (75%) of those most familiar with the technology indicate they expected Siebel to remain in production until 2023. More significantly 14% thought the technology would be in use beyond 2033 – 40 years after it was first released.

  • 25 percent of those responding thought Siebel would be used throughout 2018;
  • 38 percent of those responding thought Siebel would be in use until 2023;
  • 19 percent of those responding thought Siebel would be in use until 2028;
  • 4 percent of those responding thought Siebel would be in use in 2033;
  • 14 percent of those responding thought Siebel would be in use beyond 2033;

"Clearly the results speak directly to what we are seeing in the market,” said Terry Wharton, CEO at 4Xor Corporation. “A CRM tool that works needs more than just a WOW factor. Siebel gets the job done and has the underlying technology to integrate well into the customer's business enterprise. Siebel's competitors can't provide the enterprise integration or analytics that a company of any size requires to remain competitive. My vote remains with the opinion of the poll."

Given a large implementation can take years to complete and often cost millions of dollars in addition to the software license costs it’s not surprising that 100 percent still expect Oracle Siebel still to be production throughout 2013. Oracle Siebel technology was designed to solve complex business problems across departmental boundaries. Once it becomes part of a large organization’s business process it cannot be easily changed or swapped out without a significant risk of revenue loss.

More significantly 75% believe the technology will still be in use 5 to 10 years or more from today which is beyond the planning horizon of most organizations.

“Although you might have to change the company you work for, or where you go about your work, if you choose to you can do Siebel work for the rest of your career,” said Bruce Daley, Editor of Siebel Observer. “As long as bugs continue to be fixed, new features added, and a healthy market for employees and contractors with Siebel skills exists, any decision to replace Oracle Siebel will be made by organizations on a case by case basis and most will elect to keep the technology in production.”

“The majority of respondents who give Siebel CRM another six to ten years is consistent with Oracle's Application Unlimited strategy,” said Alexander Hansal, editor of Siebel Essentials. “With Oracle clearly supporting Siebel CRM for years to come and with Open UI in the toolbox, the Siebel community will have a lot of opportunities in the next ten years and maybe even longer.”

The blogs participating in this poll included CRM Conundrum, GeeKs Blogging, Impossible Siebel, On Demand Education, Only Siebel, Siebel Essentials, Siebel Observer, Siebel Tech Blog, Siebel Unleashed and Wentari.
