LeVar Burton and the beloved children’s television series Reading Rainbow, which he hosted and produced since its inception, celebrates its 30th Anniversary next month. This exciting milestone was kicked off last week with the release of the Kindle Fire version of the new Reading Rainbow adventure app, a digital library of over 300 quality children’s books and video field trips. The app quickly became the #1 Educational and #1 Reading app on the Amazon App Store. After 30 years, Reading Rainbow continues the mission of inspiring young readers as it has done for three decades.

“I come from a family of teachers, and when I was offered the opportunity to host Reading Rainbow in 1983, I recognized immediately the value in using the technology of the time to inspire kids to read,” said Burton. Thirty years later, the RRKIDZ team and I remain passionate about speaking directly to parents and kids of this digital generation, offering them a new tool to spark that love of reading so necessary for success and fulfillment in life.”

“Reading Rainbow has inspired generations of readers, and we are excited to bring their award winning children’s content to Kindle Fire, providing kids with hundreds of stories that will fuel their passion for reading,” said Aaron Rubenson, Director of Amazon Appstore. “Parents and kids love Kindle Fire, and we think they’ll be thrilled with the way Kindle Fire brings the Reading Rainbow adventure to life.”

Burton’s business partner, RRKIDZ CEO and Co-founder, Mark Wolfe added, “Millions of families use the Kindle Fire as their tablet of choice and we really are thrilled to bring our library service to Amazon’s vast audience. Amazon started as simply a book company back in 1994, and LeVar and I think it’s particularly exciting for both reading brands to connect decades later bringing books to kids on their Kindle FIRE tablets.”

Designed for children ages 3-9, the Netflix-like service delivers a library filled with hundreds of curated books and video field trips presented in a world of adventure, fantasy and discovery. Within 36 hours of its release, the Reading Rainbow App became the #1 educational App sold in 3 countries, and continues to win awards and acclaim - most recently named a Gold Winner from the Mom’s Choice Awards and a “Top 100 App” from PC Magazine. In less than 12 months, children across the world have read over two million books on the Reading Rainbow App.

The new Reading Rainbow digital library brings together books from numerous acclaimed children’s publishers. Each book comes alive with audio storytelling by celebrity actors, including spoken word Grammy winner LeVar Burton himself, and features animations and related activities to enhance the story reminiscent of the original TV series. All of the books contain themes whereby children can be connected and inspired by the world they live in, while simultaneously developing a true love for reading. Similar to the Reading Rainbow television series, children journey alongside Burton on video field trips that connect the stories children read to the world they live in. Combining newly produced video as well as classic segments from the TV show. New video field trips and books are added to the service every week.

Burton concludes, "I am exceptionally proud and humbled to have reached this 30 year milestone, where Reading Rainbow has become a pop culture icon as well as a brand that continues to inspire. It is my deepest wish that Reading Rainbow and I can continue to inspire children for another thirty years and beyond."
