Young designers and inspired creative minds are being sought after to submit their work to the first annual Bright Ideas Design Competition, a concept created by two companies that have been the foremost leaders in the lighting market for more than 43 years – Maxim Lighting and ET2 Contemporary Lighting, two companies Littman Bros Lighting has been proud to associate with for the past several years.

The Bright Ideas Design Competition project for these lighting companies came about in order to give the next generation of motivated and brilliant lighting designers a chance to shine; the concept, according to maximlighting.com/competition/, is to “inspire the creative minds of the designer while being economically conscious.”

In line with to the competition rules and regulations, applicants must be students currently enrolled in an educational program representing any design disciplines; they are to create a contemporary pendant, sconce or LED fixture for either indoor or outdoor use. The conception should be an original lighting fixture that could be mass-produced and sold in today’s market.

Designers are required to take into account:

  •     Innovation
  •     Use of materials
  •     Extent of practical application
  •     Capability of manufacturing
  •     Target market
  •     Aesthetics
  •     Ease of use and maintenance
  •     Light dispersal and visual ease

This competition in itself is truly a test of not only aesthetics but also the students’ capacity and ability to mass-produce their design; both Maxim Lighting and ET2 Contemporary Lighting have been affected and stimulated by what they’ve seen in young designers artistic taste and creativity but to now use that idea and reflect on the costs of production, target market and provisions of budget is a whole new ball game.

According to a recent press release regarding the Bright Ideas Design Competition, Maxim Lighting and ET2 Contemporary Lighting are not expecting to see a “spare no expense” method to this competition.

“They believe a product can only be popular if it is attainable…School has taught [students] about beauty, innovation, design aesthetics, but no all designs that are ideal for a gallery translate to the everyday consumer.”

Each design project will be judged on its own merit and after a panel of some of the most influential and well-known industry leaders judge the entries, winners will not only receive local and national recognition but also cash prizes of up to $1,400; first place winner will win a trip to China, “where they will gain first hand experience dealing with the manufacturing process,” according to maximlighting.com.

Entries must be submitted on or before June 23, 2013 and winners will be announced by July 12, 2013.

Maxim Lighting and ET2 Contemporary Lighting are the authority in this field within the lighting market – as maintained by maximlighting.com, both company’s market themselves nationally and internationally and have a presence in over 1,500 showrooms, builders and e-commerce platforms. Winners, as well as participants within this competition, will not only gain prime knowledge about the details of this industry but also expand their connections and relations to manufacturers and showrooms.
