"You can always improve on safety guidelines and the DRA Wrangler Training program has done just that for us. We've always been proud of our training, but this is a great addition." Head Wrangler Jane Van Berkum of the Rainbow Trout Ranch

Well established dude ranch,Rainbow Trout Ranch, hosted a Wrangler Training class May 24th. Assisted by the ranch owner family head wranglers David and Jane Van Berkum, Damon Gibbons of Creede, CO was on hand to lead the class.

The program was developed in 2006 by the Dude Ranchers' Association (DRA) with the view that there were no training classes available specific to the dude ranch industry. Since then there have been four printings of the manual used to guide discussions in training sessions. Sessions are divided between classroom time, site walk throughs at the barn and corrals, and practice scenarios both at the barn and on a ride. Wranglers who attend and pass the class receive a card of completion valid for five years.

Second time Rainbow Trout Ranch wrangler Allie Setta, who attended the same class at another ranch last year, said that "Both times it has helped me visualize possible accidents and how to handle them using things you wouldn't usually think of for First Aid treatment, like saddle pads and baseball caps." Another Rainbow Trout Ranch wrangler, Colton Gaiser, is a trained EMT and he too said that the training was very worthwhile since it is specific to trail ride situations. Both agree that they hope they never have to use it, but they are glad they had the training.

According to Jane Van Berkum "Most dude ranches do have great general training for their wranglers, and we certainly do, but incorporating the DRA wrangler training has made it even stronger. And next year we hope to attend the same class at another host ranch here in southern Colorado."
