Spirit Quest Tours, a Las Vegas travel company known for spiritual adventures to exotic locations, will lead a “deliciously different” tour to Spain in September, according to company co-founder Halle Eavelyn. “Tilting at Windmills: Wine, Tapas & Tales – Madrid,” scheduled for September 5 – 11, with an optional extension tour to Barcelona through Sept. 15, has been designed to delight foodies and those who yearn for a very special “gastro-spiritual” experience to feed “body, mind, and soul.”

Eavelyn says that Madrid and the surrounding region have recently undergone a culinary revolution, brought on in large part by an influx of visitors and ex-pats from around the world. In addition to being known for its romantic history, medieval architecture, museums, and charming cobblestone streets, tourists are converging upon Madrid for the food.

“Madrid is an amazing city in so many ways, with a rich history of culinary specialties. While France has held the crown for cuisine for decades, the new haven for all things gastro is Madrid,” Eavelyn says.

Spirit Quest Tours has gained a reputation for one-of-a-kind trips to locations as diverse as Mexico, Egypt, Bali, and France, and the Wine, Tapas & Tales Tour is the first of their food trips.

“This tour will provide guests with opportunities to eat, drink, and revel in the best tapas bars and food halls in Madrid. We’ll participate in cooking classes, including a paella-making class and a jamon (ham) class, and we’ll visit the sites where some of the most famous writers and artists in all of Spanish history dwelled,” explains Eavelyn. “In Madrid, the food calls to you from every coffee shop, cervecería and restaurant. In Spain, you see glass cases with the food on display, with hot and cold tapas always beckoning you to try just one more small plate.”

Guests on the tour will meet in Madrid and stay in a four-star resort in the heart of the Barrio de las Letras (Literary District). The Petit Palace Santa Barbara is the former residence of the Marquis of Quintanar, converted into a luxury hotel and operated by the world renowned Luxe hotel group.

In addition to daily walking tours and stops at tapas bars, highlights of the trip will include a visit to Toledo, where diverse cultures and religions have co-existed for centuries, and a dinner at Botin, the oldest restaurant in the world, which has been in business for nearly 300 years.

“Spaniards take great pride in the food they prepare and serve. At Botin, guests will marvel at the white-coated servers who serve up haunch after haunch of jamon, mushrooms they’ve never encountered, and plate after plate of the most exquisite tapas,” Eavelyn says.

While the centerpieces of Spanish cuisine are ham, beef and seafood, it is possible for vegetarians to find plenty to eat in Spain, Eavelyn adds, explaining that, in Madrid, the daily offerings are determined by what is available fresh. The result is a creative selection of foods and menus that are ever-changing and that provide a gastro-spiritual experience worth traveling around the world to enjoy.
