Independent Collection Hotels Baseball Showdown

In The Independent Collection Baseball Showdown, hotels within the Collection compete against each other (through their hometown teams).

Four hotels. Four teams. Two great rivalries.

“I think it’s great that Javier from NU Hotel Brooklyn is being such a good sport about participating in this competition. He is going to have to give a lot of discounts” said Donte Johnson, Capitol Hill Hotel’s general manager.

For die-hard baseball fans a visit to a rival baseball city on game night always comes with the risk of being (a little) teased by supporters of the opposing team. Maybe it isn’t typically at the hotel or by the hotel associates, but that was before the Independent Collection Baseball Showdown. During this Showdown, you are sure to hear some jovial teasing at the hotel, but you will also get a discount if your team wins.

The Independent Collection is a growing portfolio of boutique lifestyle hotels located along the east coast in rival baseball cities. With the Independent Collection Baseball Showdown, the personalities of IC hotels, cities, and leaders are brought to life.

The promotion includes four participating hotels and two rivalries. The National League East Washington Nationals versus New York Mets, as represented by Capitol Hill Hotel and NU Hotel Brooklyn and one of the greatest rivalries in sports – the New York Yankees versus the Boston Red Sox, played out by Hotel 373 Fifth Avenue in Manhattan and the newly re-launched Boston hotel The Boxer.

Here’s how it works: when rival teams are in a series, it is game on for guests as well. On game day, guests checking-in from the rival city receive a souvenir representing the hotel’s team as well as a promise that if the guest’s home team wins, the guest will receive a 10 percent discount* at check-out. For example, this Friday, May 31, when the Red Sox play the Yankees, New Yorkers will receive Red Sox souvenirs when they check-in at The Boxer and Bostonians will receive Yankees swag when they visit Hotel 373. The same rules apply for New Yorkers in Washington D.C. when The Nationals play the Mets next Tuesday, June 4, and for Washingtonians in New York at the same time. This happens throughout the season each time these teams play against each other.

“I think it’s great that Javier from NU Hotel Brooklyn is being such a good sport about participating in this competition. He is going to have to give a lot of discounts,” said Donte Johnson, Capitol Hill Hotel’s general manager.

The inter-Collection, multi-city competition continues on social media. A scoreboard will be kept with an internal ranking of how the teams (and thereby hotels) are ranking against each other. The tally begins with their next series, which begins on Friday, May 31 for the Sox versus the Yankees and next Tuesday, June 4 for the New York Mets versus The Washington Nationals.

At the end of the season, the two competing general managers will get together for their last game of the regular season against each other. The GM supporting the team lagging in the contest has to attend wearing not only the opposing team’s jersey, but this time donning face paint. For the Mets versus the Nationals competition that game will be on Thursday, September 1, at Shea Stadium.

“I feel bad that Donte will have to travel, but he is going to look great sporting blue and orange,” remarked Javier Egipciaco, NU Hotel Brooklyn’s general manager.

Batter-up, the fun begins Friday, May 31 as the Red Sox play the Yankees.
