The Iowa Chronic Care Consortium (ICCC), a clinically focused population health organization dedicated to health risk reduction and chronic care management strategies, has conducted an extensive follow-up study of early adopter organizations that have invested in health coach training, specifically focused on addressing the costs and complications associated with chronic care patients. The results of this survey, recognized as one of the most extensive of its kind, were presented at the National Home Summit and is now available for download at the ICCC's Clinical Health Coach site.
"Our findings show that the investment in health coaching can pay significant dividends, both in better outcomes and an improved patient experience, but healthcare organizations are only beginning to recognize that value," said Jody Hereford, BSN, MS. "As more of the quality metric results that CMS and others are requiring take hold, we anticipate the investment in and adoption of comprehensive clinical health coaching to accelerate."
Study respondents recognize that how they engage and communicate with patients and families about their health positively influences their motivation for behavior change and participation in all-important self-care activities. Also consistently noted was that healthcare settings/systems operate from planned, proactive, and population-based strategies, and that those organizations need an effective framework in which to integrate these enhanced communication and engagement skills if they want to impact quality, cost, and experience.
