The US Drug Watchdog is calling their initiative focused on identifying every possible recipient of the recalled DePuy ASR XL metal-on-metal hip implant vital, because time could run out for residents of the states, where there is still time to get these recipients identified. Why all the fuss about the recalled DePuy ASR hip implant for recipients in states like Florida, Massachusetts, Washington, and North Carolina? According to Reuters on July 12th 2012, "A total of 500,000 patients in the United States have received metal-on-metal hips, according to government data. Of those patients, an estimated 37,000 got the DePuy ASR implant." The US Drug Watchdog says, "Our big worry is according to court records only about 12,000 recipients of the DePuy ASR XL have been identified by the courts. Based on the Reuters numbers of July 12th of 2012 this means there are about 25,000 DePuy ASR XL recipients who have not yet been identified by the court, and we are trying to change this sad fact by at least trying to identify the recipients in the states where identification is still possible."
