The St Helens and New Zealand rugby player was at Sutton Academy on 17th April on Elton Head Road to deliver a workshop to a group of excited school children on the merits of education and how education is closely linked to sporting excellence. This appearance is just one of a number of community focused initiatives and events run by Saints Foundation through their Community Development programme. The Sutton Academy have also aided the development of the ‘Saints Summer School’, a unique schooling project which has been designed for young students in the transition of moving from primary school to senior school.

Also in attendance was Tony Smith, Managing Director of St Helens based distance learning company NCC Home Learning. Education in the community is a common goal shared between Saints, the Sutton Academy and NCC which creates a great amount of synergy to improve standards of education for people of all ages. NCC Home Learning were recent winners of an E3 Business Award for displaying excellence in ‘the three E’s’, enterprise, education, and employment.

Lance is currently studying a Business Management Diploma through NCC Home Learning, displaying the focus held on gaining qualifications that will aid in personal development. Covering subjects such as effective management and performance management, the course creates avenues for career progression after a playing career. Taking distance learning qualifications is not uncommon for sports stars, with Lance’s St Helens team mate Josh Perry studying a Life Coaching Diploma also with NCC Home Learning.

The future looks bright for the youth of St Helen’s with such accomplished sports stars passing on their wealth of knowledge and experience. There is ample opportunity for students to flourish in one of the many community projects in and around St Helens.
