I found myself wondering, ‘Why isn’t there an online database for beer prices? '

Several weeks ago, the SaveOnBrew (SOB) mobile beer price app was available to iPhone users via the iTunes store. Starting this week, Kindle users can also download the app through the Amazon marketplace.

The SaveOnBrew mobile app is a must-have for beer lovers. Their database lists 250,000 to 300,000 beer prices from more than 50,000 beer retailers nationwide. Consumers can search for beer sales within a 5 to 20 mile radius, get maps to the nearest location selling discounted beer, and share beer specials with their friends via social media sites like Facebook and Twitter.

“For years, I was the go-to guy for my friends,” explains SOB founder Mark Davidson. “They knew I checked the circulars. They knew I called the retailers. They knew I would never buy a case of beer at the first store I stopped in. I was like my mom shopping for bed sheets, you know… I had the price graphs mapped out for the year. I knew every beer sale! I never paid full price.”

Davidson says he got the idea for SaveOnBrew when his friends joked that he should become the “GasBuddy for Beer.”

“Suddenly, I found myself wondering, ‘Why isn’t there an online database for beer prices? Why can’t we do that?’”

Davidson’s obsession has garnered him a fan base of hundreds of thousands of beer lovers who surf SaveOnBrew for beer deals and regularly read the SaveOnBrew Beer Blog, which publishes beer news, reviews, lists, brewer interviews, and editorials.

“We have a really awesome community of readers and active deal-hunters who contribute to our listings all the time,” says Davidson. “The mobile apps just seemed like a natural extension of our business, since so many drinkers find themselves out and about, and suddenly needing a beer, pronto.”

Mobile app development was not without its fair share of challenges. Davidson says there were early glitches to fix and access hurdles to clear in tapping a large marketplace like Amazon, but it was all worth it to hear the positive feedback. “I can’t tell you how many house parties we’ve saved in the last two weeks alone,” Davidson laughs.
