At Cathedral High School, safety is our number one priority."

Cathedral is one of twenty schools that were selected to receive an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) from the Parent Heart Watch. Every year in schools across the country, children and adults suffer Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA). The difference between life and death often depends upon how prepared the school is to handle an SCA event. While Cathedral already has an AED in its gymnasium, this second AED will make it possible to respond to any emergency in the school.

On May 21, 2013, John and Louann Ellsessar travelled to Cathedral High School to personally deliver an AED from the Parent Heart Watch. The Ellessar’s have dedicated their lives to educating the public about Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA), having lost their 16-year old son Michael to a cardiac emergency. A child dies of SCA every three days according to Louann and 5,000 to 7,000 people die each year.

Thanks to the efforts of Cathedral’s Social Media Club, the school was one of twenty schools that were selected to receive an AED. The Social Media Club produced a video which accompanied Cathedral’s grant application for the AED. The students’ passionate request for the AED was instrumental in our success.
