Usually known for releasing limited-time bundles of indie video game soundtracks from games like Super Meat Boy, Minecraft, and Plants vs. Zombies, the Retro Game Music Bundle brings together some of the soundtracks from gaming's golden age. Those who spend at least $1 on the bundle will get Jazz Jackrabbit 1&2, The 7th Guest, Tyrian, and a special 20th Anniversary remastered version of Myst. Spending at least $10 will unlock a bunch of additional soundtracks, both from classic games and modern tributes to the retro sound. As usual with the Game Music Bundle, the top contributors will get exclusive physical prizes, including original concept sketches from Riven and customized recordings by the voice of Duke Nukem, Jon St. John.
Speaking of Duke, the Retro Game Music Bundle has had to deal with its own share of controversy. Several of the soundtracks, including Duke Nukem 3D and a special Duke 3D remix album (featuring fresh takes on Duke's tracks from prominent indie composers and remixers) have been taken down from the bundle due to a copyright dispute over the ownership of some of the tracks. The GMB team is working with both parties in the dispute, in the hope of having those albums restored to the bundle.
Given that the chance to buy the Retro Game Music Bundle expires in a few days, it's unlikely that the affected albums will return before the end of the sale window. However, the GMB team wants to reassure fans that IF the copyright situation is resolved and the soundtracks are allowed to return to the bundle, that everyone who has purchased the bundle will be able to access those soundtracks again, and that all buyers will receive an e-mail notification to that effect.
The Retro Game Music Bundle is available until June 5th, 2013, when it becomes - like its iconic soundtracks - a part of gaming history.
