The Anita Bryant biopic, 'Anita' will star Uma Thurman, and be directed by Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman (Lovelace). Dennis Erdman, Howard Rosenman (The Wild Ones), and Darren Star (Sex and The City) will produce. The script is written by Chad Hodge.
Dennis Erdman is currently executive producing Taxi 22 for HBO, which is set to star James Gandolfini, written by Kenneth Lonergan. He is also executive producing an hour-long untitled drama for Showtime, written by Richard LaGravenese.
'Anita' will follow the story of anit-gay activist, Anita Bryant. Bryant was a former beauty queen and Christian singer, who became a crusader against gay rights in the ’70s when she fought a Miami-Dade County ordinance prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation. She is famous for having said, “As a mother, I know that homosexuals cannot biologically reproduce children; therefore, they must recruit our children,” she said. When she succeeded, she promised to “seek help and change for homosexuals, whose sick and sad values belie the word ‘gay,’ which they pathetically use to cover their unhappy lives.”

Among his television directing credits are 'Sex and The City', 'Mad About You', 'The Drew Carey Show', and 'The Larry Sanders Show'. Erdman's theatre directing credits include 'Marvin's Room', 'Laughing Wild', and 'The Marriage of Bette and Boo'.
'Anita', directed by Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman, produced by Darren Star, Dennis Erdman, and Howard Rosenman, will be written by Chad Hodge. It follows the life of anti-gay activist, Anita Bryant and is currently being developed by HBO.
