Many marketers optimize one or two parts of their video, and then forget about the rest – to their detriment.

One of the easiest – and possibly most obvious - ways to increase YouTube traffic to a site is to comment on other videos in the same niche. But those comments must be relevant to the video shown and they must be interesting, warns Gollan in his update How to Get More YouTube Views & Subscribers
Viewers aren’t idiots after all, most of them can spot a self-promotional promo at 100 paces. Self-promotional material for a particular YouTube channel will have the effect of simply ensuring viewers never pop on over to that particular channel, says Gollan.
And on this note, there is no point of simply uploading a video onto YouTube and allowing it to fester. Always follow up. And that means responding to any comments – whether good or bad.
The next thing to think about, says Gollan is to optimize the video that has just been uploaded.
“I can’t stress enough the importance of this,” he says. “I know this one seems so obvious, but I find many marketers optimize one or two parts of their video, and then forget about the rest – to their detriment.
“Doing this is akin to writing a blog post and only optimizing the title tag and description. If you’re not going to do the whole shebang, you might as well not bother to do any of it!”
In order to optimize a YouTube video it’s necessary to follow certain steps, says Gollan. These include:
- Inserting keywords in the title of the video so that the name of the video mentions the subject matter eg a video outlining the best types of accounting software should have ‘Best Accounting Software.mov’ but it should also be interesting enough to get viewers to click on it such as ‘Best Accounting Software to Cut Costs.’
- Writing a long description of the video.
- Adding tags (with keywords eg accounting, software, small business, etc.
But there are other ways to entice viewers too. For instance, making sure the thumbnail is not just relevant but attention grabbing too helps. YouTube offers three random thumbnails but there is also provision to upload a custom photo.
Annotations can help to encourage viewers to follow a particular YouTube channel, adds Gollan. These are simply small captions which ask the viewer to ‘subscribe,’ ‘add to playlists’ or give a ‘thumbs up,’ for example. They can be added using the speech bubble icon at the bottom of the video display.
It’s not always necessary to come up with unique subject matter for a video, says Gollan. Thousands of videos on YouTube are funny off-takes from a popular video which has gone viral.
The leading Australian business coach then goes on to talk about Categories for uploading videos into. To find a relevant category it’s easy enough to look for similar videos and insert it there. Putting it in an irrelevant category won’t do the video any favours, regardless of how well it’s been optimized, he says.
Blogger outreach is another tried and tested means of gaining new YouTube subscribers. This is where bloggers in a particular niche may be interested in uploading a video onto their site, believing it will be of interest to their own subscribers. In this way the blogger gets the content for free and the video has the chance of being aired in front of hundreds of viewers who may very well have missed it because they wouldn’t have known to look for it in the first place.
Still looking for ways to gain new YouTube followers for free? Then create playlists of similar videos to the one just shown, advises Gollan. This has the effect of encouraging viewers to remain on the channel and perhaps viewing another company-related video.
