For more than thirty years, Angel Flight West (AFW) has been arranging non-emergency air transportation so people in need can access health care and other essential services without cost to qualified passengers. In the eleven Lower-48 states that AFW serves, volunteer pilots in private aircraft donate their time and all expenses to provide access to medical care, take children to special needs camps, and transport others to needed services that save and improve their lives.
Now residents of Alaska will also have no-cost air transportation available, thanks to a new partnership between Angel Flight West and Anchorage-based PenAir.
Melissa Roberts, PenAir Vice President of Sales and Marketing, says, “PenAir is honored to be working with Angel Flight West in providing flight support to families in need of transportation in order to receive medical care not immediately available in their areas. We are proud to support their mission, while at the same time giving back to the communities we serve.”
Since 2003, Angel Flight West has enjoyed a similar partnership with Alaska Airlines, which provides AFW with 800-900 tickets per year, primarily for people who need to travel between Alaska and Seattle to receive care. And last year AFW joined forces with Hawaiian Airlines, which offers inter-island travel for Angel Flight West passengers in Hawai’i.
“Having these resources available adds another dimension to the services we’re able to offer,” says Executive Director Alan Dias. “This partnership will make a difference to those individuals in Alaska who need to get from where they are to where they need to be. We very much appreciate the commitment PenAir has made to the residents of Alaska.”
PenAir is one of the largest regional airlines in Alaska and one of the largest operators of Saab 340 aircraft in the United States. Operations began in a remote village of Alaska in 1955 with a 2-seater Taylorcraft aircraft. PenAir now operates 15 Saab 30-34 seat passenger aircraft, and employs over 430 people in the state of Alaska and on the East Coast.
