The Affordable Care Act Causing a Surge in Breast Pump Sales

Cullen’s Playpen / BabySupermarket.com has seen the demand for breast pumps boosted by a provision in the President Obama’s Affordable Care Act that requires, for the first time ever, that health insurance companies cover breast pumps.

The coverage could potentially save breast-feeding women hundreds of dollars in buying or renting. But there is considerable variation in what sorts of pumps are covered, and how they are covered.

Breastfeeding is a new issue in healthcare that has not been raised before putting a new consumer focus on access to breast pumps and the choice of renting or buying. While a lot of people do not realize that this option is available, the choice is becoming more prevalent given the Obamacare act.

Hospital grade breast pumps rent for an average fee of about $65.00 a month. Rental pumps are cleaned and sterilized by a Lactation Specialist and the kit which includes all the tubing, breast shields and membranes is required to be purchased by the consumer. The same pumps sell for about $1,000.

Babysupermarket works with Medela, one of the leading companies in breast-feeding products, on a program for mothers to rent the Symphony Breast Pump, a hospital grade breast pump with 2-Phase Expression technology which mimics the baby’s natural sucking rhythm.

Contact your local Lactation Specialist, Le Leache League, or health care professional for information concerning breast-feeding options. Visit http://www.medela.com to research breast-feeding or call their breast-feeding hotline to research all their products and get answers to question on breast-feeding. Check with your insurance company to find out information about the requirements and coverage provided.
