Partnering with PMG makes available to CRA the resources to do so much more without interrupting what we're already doing ... we're merely adding to our capabilities.
Charlotte, NC (PRWEB) June 03, 2013
PMG Research, Inc. announced today its merger with Carolinas Research Associates, effective June 1, 2013. PMG Research, Inc. (PMG), headquartered in Winston-Salem, NC, is a network of 10 wholly-owned clinical research sites located in North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee. Carolinas Research Associates (CRA) is located in Charlotte, where PMG also has a research facility.
Jennifer Byrne, President and CEO of PMG Research said the merger with CRA “fits with our strategy to acquire long-standing premier site networks that are aligned with our mission and culture of providing unparalleled service to our clinical trial partners while staying committed to progress, integrity and excellence. The CRA staff and investigators are an excellent complement to our existing PMG of Charlotte site.” Yvonne McCracken, Founder, CEO and President of CRA will transition over to PMG along with the rest of the current CRA staff in what is expected to be a smooth transition for staff, study participants, monitors and physician investigators.
This move will position PMG as one of the largest sites in the Charlotte region. In Charlotte, PMG partners with 10 practicing physician investigators at six practice locations and has a research database of over 18,000 patients, whereas CRA partners with 12-15 investigators at seven locations and maintains a research database of over 10,000. This partnership allows for a “huge opportunity for growth, allowing us to offer trials to a greater number of potential trial participants” says Leigh Smith, Manager of Clinical Operations at PMG Research of Charlotte. The geographic reach of PMG Research in the Charlotte area has also been extended. Previously, PMG’s footprint was fairly limited to the Charlotte metro area, while CRA’s existing physician partners are spread out from Charlotte to Rock Hill, SC.
For the pharmaceutical and trials industry, the merger means collaboration with more physician investigators across a wider range of therapeutic areas, increased physician referrals to the PMG network and better access to patients via the expanded database – all of which allow the newly merged organizations to work toward becoming more integrated. According to McCracken, “Partnering with PMG makes available to CRA the resources to do so much more without interrupting what we’re already doing. We’re not changing the way we do anything – we’re merely adding to our capabilities. We can continue to move ahead with strategic growth initiatives because of the resources we now share.”
In a time where the clinical research industry is consolidating left and right, stability is more important than ever. Dr. George Raad, a family medicine physician and long-time investigator with PMG Research of Charlotte foresees this as a positive move for prospective trial participants as well. “Because we now have a broader range of therapeutic areas and a larger network of physician investigators, we can easily and seamlessly connect patients with a wider range of studies than we were able to before. The merger presents a huge opportunity for participants and the Charlotte community as a whole”, says Raad.
Patients interested in participating in a trial can rely on a new research organization with a strong history of providing quality and innovative research studies across a wider range of conditions. Fred Fowler, MD, one of CRA’s first Principal Investigators, is also optimistic in regards to the merger and the anticipated results. Having served as an investigator in various clinical trials for well over a decade, he said he is excited by the opportunities this merger represents. “I see it as the natural evolution of these two dynamic organizations and I look forward to partnering with the ‘new’ PMG.”
Established in 1979, PMG has a wealth of experience conducting clinical research trials for pharmaceutical, biotechnology and medical device companies aiming to obtain FDA approval for new medications, vaccines and medical devices for various indications including diabetes, hypertension, gout, dermatological conditions such as acne and rosacea, as well as numerous vaccines. Carolinas Research Associates was founded in 1996 and has historically focused on trials concerning gastrointestinal, dermatology, internal medicine and rheumatology disorders.
“We’re enthusiastic about our new partnership and expect the integration to be seamless since we both already have similar processes in place. Moving forward, this will prove to be a positive move for both organizations”, says McCracken.
