Georgia Quartararo, Executive Director of Jiminy Cricket Entertainment (http://www.jiminycricket-entertainment.com), in association with Bits N Pieces Puppet Theatre, lifted the spirits of a number of sick children last week by staging a free puppet theatre performance at St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital on May 28. The performance of Jack and the Beanstalk was sponsored by a donation from The NY Yankees Foundation.
This is part of an ongoing program initiated by Ms. Quartararo to entertain sick and disadvantaged children in the Tampa Bay area through the magic of puppetry. Their first puppet performances were staged at All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg (Jan 22) and St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital in Tampa (Jan 23). Each show was performed at no charge to the hospitals and geared toward hospitalized children between the ages of 3 to 16.
Christie Schwichtenberg, Director of Child Life at St. Joseph’s expressed her appreciation and enthusiasm on behalf of her staff: “We were very excited to have Bits N Pieces visit us again and for the NY Yankees generous sponsorship of this performance. The lives of many hospitalized children were brightened by your first visit.”
Since the launch of her initiative to entertain sick and underprivileged children, Ms. Quartararo has been actively seeking corporate and foundation sponsorships to allow this program to flourish. She has aligned herself with the renowned Bits N Pieces Puppet Theatre of Dover, Florida, which has been staging professional puppet shows since 1972 and performs world-wide. Quartararo is also seeking to expand the venues beyond hospitals to foster homes, and other facilities catering to children in need of assistance.
Ms. Quartararo expressed her reasons for starting the program: “Having seen the faces of many children in despair in my travels, nothing is more satisfying to me than being able to bring a smile to a child that may be sick, neglected, or in some way deprived of the fun they should be experiencing."
"Through the play of a puppet show children are refreshed emotionally,” added Jerry Bickel, Executive Director of Bits N Pieces Entertainment. “When inspired, they have a more positive attitude, which helps them deal with the challenges of their lives." Bits N Pieces is a 501-C3 organization and therefore all donations for these events, as well as sponsorships are tax deductible.
