Concern has been raised by the public and the Southend Echo newspaper over delays in releasing CCTV images for appeals after serious incidents.

The newspaper noted how in once instant, it took six months to release an image after a man threatened staff with a gun in a Sainsbury’s Local Store.

The paper reveals that Essex Police claim the delays are due to officers relying on CCTV being downloaded by the owner as soon as possible, then it being handed over to investigating officers.
They added that the officers then rely on CCTV being available in viewable format and if it isn’t will spend time converting it so that it can be watched.

Mick Thwaites, a former police commander, told the Echo: “It’s really helpful to get CCTV footage out there as soon as possible. The public can respond and help identify suspects.”

A spokesperson from AlertSystems said:

“CCTV is a really important tool in helping to catch the people responsible for a number of different crimes. However its effectiveness relies on the speed Police can access and process the images. With a HD CCTV system, footage can be produced in standard electronic formats or pdf documents within seconds. Making these images available quickly and easily is a great aid to the Police and secures the best conviction results.”
