The Cancer Support Community (CSC) released data today showing a significant gap in patient desire to have conversations about the cost of cancer care and initiation of conversations by the health care team.
In a study of 708 people attending CSC’s Frankly Speaking About Cancer: Coping with the Cost of Care workshops, 59.4% of respondents reported that no one on their health care team initiated a discussion about the financial aspects of their care. In this study, 22.7% of patients actively requested information from their health care team, and one-third of them did not receive information about cost.
“There remains a disconnect between the activity of managing care and managing the cost of that care. This continues to put patients and their families at risk every day,” said Kim Thiboldeaux, President and CEO of the Cancer Support Community. “Raising awareness and creating resources to empower patients on these issues helps everyone in the long run.”
The study showed that patients are keenly interested in the topic and over 40% of them did seek information from other sources including fellow patients, the Internet, patient support organizations, insurance providers and friends and family. Further, when given information, nearly half of those completing the survey found it to be somewhat or very useful.
“As we’ve seen in this study, over half of the people with whom we spoke indicated they experienced distress as a result of the cost of cancer care. While we continue to make progress in our effort to fully inform patients and families of the comprehensive picture of the cancer journey, we must focus on ways in which to reduce the social and emotional burden that comes with a cancer diagnosis. We look forward to collaborating with the broader health care team to develop solutions,” said Thiboldeaux.
